Tolquhon Castle

The most picturesque of the castles in the Grampian countryside

Tolquhon Castle

Noted for its highly ornamented gatehouse, Tolquhon is one of the most picturesque of the castles in the Grampian countryside.

  • The gatehouse – a real gem, built not to deter, but to impress – which it still contrives to do.
  • The main house – a charming composition at the far end of the courtyard, with a good ‘below stairs’ and family rooms above to explore. Spot the initials T.L. high up on the outside of the main house – a rare instance of a medieval architect signing his work.
  • The secret hiding-place – in the laird’s bedchamber on the second floor, a hidden compartment below the floor where Sir William hid his valuables
