Spynie Palace

Residence of the bishops of Moray

Spynie Palace

For five centuries until 1686, Spynie Palace was the residence of the bishops of Moray.

The beauty of the surroundings and the substantial wildlife and birdsong make the Palace a wonderful place to visit.

Highlights

  • Mighty David’s Tower – the largest tower house by volume surviving in Scotland.
  • The corbels in the great hall – hinting at the structure’s former grandeur.
  • The site of the old cathedral – walk across to Spynie Kirk (not in HS care) and locate the gravestone of James Ramsay MacDonald, Labour’s first Prime Minister.
