Newark Castle

Firth of Clyde castle mainly associated with Patrick Maxwell

Newark Castle

This 15th century castle is mainly associated with Patrick Maxwell.

His achievements in elegantly extending Newark are diminished by his notoriety for murdering two neighbours and beating his wife of 44 years and mother of his 16 children.

The Castle offers excellent views over the Firth of Clyde.

Highlights

  • The exterior – exquisite Jacobean details make this one of the finest buildings of its time.
  • The ‘below stairs’ – a wonderful glimpse into the working lives of the servants.
  • The little bedchamber – a late 16th-century chamber still retaining its fixtures and fittings. These include a charming bed-press (a bed that folded away into a cupboard), wall paneling and painted ceiling.
