Inchmahome Priory

Set on an island in the Lake of Menteith, Inchmahome is an idyllically-situated Augustinian monastery dating from 1238

Inchmahome Priory

Set on its island in the scenic Lake of Menteith, Inchmahome Priory provided an idyllic environment for the Augustinian canons who settled here in the early 1200s. It seems remote, but is close to Stirling, a key centre of power in medieval Scotland – and the child Mary Queen of Scots was brought here for her safety when an English invasion looked likely.

Highlights

  • Mary Queen of Scots spent three weeks here when she was four years old.
  • The Lake of Menteith – The approach by boat showcases the idyllic setting of the site.
  • The west front – an attractive architectural composition.
  • The chapter house – This former meeting room for the canons now houses a fine collection of stone memorials, including a rare 13th-century double effigy of a couple in a loving embrace.
  • The island – a haven of peace and abundant with a wide variety of wildlife.
