Elgin Cathedral

Home to Scotland’s finest octagonal chapter house

Elgin Cathedral

One of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval buildings, Elgin Cathedral is a magnificent ruin, much of which dates back to the 13th century.

Its many outstanding architectural features include the country’s finest octagonal chapter house.

Highlights

  • Guided Tours available Monday-Friday
  • The wonderful 13th-century west front – one of the finest architectural sights in Scotland.
  • The stone bishop – this ‘larger-than-life’ statue in the nave looks for all the world like a giant chess piece.
  • The 15th-century chapter house – the ‘board room’ of the cathedral authorities still stands remarkably complete.
  • Scotland’s tallest gravestone – placed against the south choir aisle, it stands 5m high and records the Anderson family of Linkwood from 1674 to 1813.
