Built as the lordly residence of the Crichtons and later home to the Earls of Bothwell. Stunning 16th century courtyard façade.

Highlights

  • The location – sitting in splendid isolation on a terrace overlooking the River Tyne.
  • The late 14th-century tower house – one of the oldest built in Scotland.
  • Chancellor Crichton’s great hall– a remarkable legacy, built around 1450.
  • The diamond-faceted facade – added by Francis Stewart around 1580. Nothing quite like this was built anywhere else in Scotland
