The castle is located 4km south west of Pathhead off the A68.Facilities & access
Parking: There is a large rough gravel surfaced car park approx 550 metres from the site. Visitors with mobility problems can be dropped off at the Castle. Please telephone the Steward in advance on 01875 320 017.
Approach to Site: The site is approached through a kissing gate and along a 600m long rough dirt track that is liable to flooding in the winter. This had some steep gradients up to 1.8 for 20m. There is a wooden gate 1m wide into the Castle enclosure and then a short cobbled section to the Castle.
Reception and Visitor Centre: The reception area and shop is accessed via a small threshold ramp down into the vault and then a timber step up.
Monument (section by section): The ground floor is generally on the level, but with some stone thresholds. It consisist of the Courtyard (which has gentle inclines and changes in level), Chancellor's room, Crichton's lodgings, Bothwell range, bake house and tower house floor, The surface is mostly loose gravel. The first floor can be accessed by two sets of wide straight stone stairs with a handrail and one curved tapering stair without handrail from coutyard. It consists of the Hall, Kitchen, Pantries, Dining Room, Parlour and Old Hall. The pit prison is accessed by a stone staircase with 10 steps and handrail. The Stables are 36m way from the Castle over rough grass covered terrain. Inside it is all on the level and surfaced with loose gravel.
