Dirleton Castle And Garden

Dirleton Castle has boasted a garden probably since its earliest days as a medieval fortified residence.

Dirleton Castle And Garden

For 400 years, Dirleton Castle stood as a magnificent fortress–residence for three successive noble families. It was badly damaged during Cromwell’s siege of 1650, but its fortunes revived in the 1660s when the Nisbet family built a new mansion close to the picturesque ruins.

They also resuscitated the splendid gardens, which now include the world’s longest herbaceous border.<sty sys-break/.parse

Highlights

  • The de Vaux towers – built around 1240 and among the oldest castle fragments surviving in Scotland.
  • The Haliburton range – with its grim pit-prison, pretty chapel and cavernous storage vaults.
  • The Ruthven dovecot – one of the best preserved pigeon houses in Scotland, housing over 1000 nesting boxes.
  • The gardens – dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and rivalling the ancient castle for attention.
