Sweetheart Abbey

Romantic abbey founded by Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway in memory of her husband John Balliol

Sweetheart Abbey

Sweetheart Abbey was founded in 1273 by Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway in memory of her husband John Balliol.

On her death, she was laid to rest next to her husband’s embalmed heart and the monks named their abbey in memory of her.

Highlights

  • The abbey church – still standing remarkably complete, and still contriving to inspire and overawe 700 years on.
  • The precinct wall – an impressive enclosure wall of massive granite boulders, ranking alongside the wall at St Andrews cathedral priory as the most complete in Scotland.
  • The stone effigy of Lady Dervorgilla of Galloway in the south transept – the original effigy was destroyed at the Reformation but Abbot Gilbert had this new one made later in the 16th century.
