Edinburgh Castle, Scotland’s number one paid for visitor attraction has unveiled a host of new hospitality and tourism offerings for 2012. During August, Historic Scotland and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo have joined together to offer a selection of unique hospitality options as the Tattoo hosts a celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Historic Scotland is launching themed tours at a number of properties across its estate. The tours will run until September and participating sites include Arbroath Abbey, Dallas Dhu Distillery, Dirleton Castle, Huntingtower Castle and Skara Brae. The tours are designed to tie into key aspects of history from the sites’ past.

Work by Ross of Mull and Tobermory Brownies is to go on display in Iona, Bunessan and Tobermory. The girls who make up the two groups, aged 7-10, worked together to learn more about the history of the nunnery on Iona. Now their art work is on show at St Ronan’s Chapel on Iona for visitors to see.

Historic Scotland’s Scheduling team is heading to Argyll in May to visit around 120 scheduled monuments across the region, and assess a number of new sites which may be scheduled for the first time. Scheduled monuments are of national importance and legally protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. Currently there are some 8,200 scheduled monuments across Scotland, ranging from the earliest traces of humankind around 10,000 years ago, up to and including remains from the Second World War.

Historic Scotland is hosting a public meeting to present the results of research carried out on the seventh-century battle of Dún Nechtain, as part of a project to produce an Inventory of Historic Battlefields in Scotland.
