Stirling's cosmopolitan court revealedMedia Releases
New research has revealed the cosmopolitan character of the Renaissance Scottish court, including what may be the first clear record of Africans at the royal palace in Stirling. Freelance historian, John Harrison, has been investigating original documents as part of Historic Scotland’s £12 million project to return the royal palace within the walls of Stirling Castle to how it may have looked in the mid-16th century. The palace will reopen to the public in 2011 as a major new Scottish visitor experience.

UK to put forward 'fewer and fitter' places for future UNESCO World Heritage Site designationMedia Releases
A competition to find more cultural and natural heritage places of global importance , which are fit to become future UK World Heritage Sites, was launched today by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge. In future the Government will put forward fewer sites for consideration by UNESCO, with a streamlined application system to help ensure success.

Late medieval defences uncovered during tattoo works at Edinburgh CastleMedia Releases
Late medieval walls and the foundations of what appears to be a military spur, which formed part of the outer defences at Edinburgh Castle, have been uncovered by archaeologists on the castle esplanade. The defences which date from at least the 16th century were discovered during the ongoing foundation works for the new tattoo stands.
