Historic Scotland has today (date) reported a 7% increase in visitors to its sites over the past twelve months. The figures, which include 345 of Scotland’s leading heritage sites including Scotland’s number one paid for visitor attraction, Edinburgh Castle, are ahead of projections and paint an encouraging picture for the tourism sector, following a more challenging year in 2008-2009.

Stanley Mills is running a series of activity days for children during the school holidays with the help of one of its former workers. John Robertson, who used to work at the site as a mechanic, is returning to his old place of work to take part in a new activity for school holiday clubs entitled ‘The Mystery of the Missing Mechanic’.

Archaeologists have uncovered a second Neolithic figurine at the Links of Noltland dig on Westray where the Orkney Venus was discovered. The figurine is likely to be more than 4,500 years old. The figure is the same size and shape as the original sandstone Venus figurine but is made of clay and is missing its head, so stands only 34mm (one and a half inches approx) high. A thumb shaped depression in the top of the body shows where the head was attached with scorch marks from heat used to fix the head to the torso.

Young people in Orkney are being given the opportunity to take part in one of the island’s most exciting archaeological digs. ORCA (Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology) and WHS Rangers Service have teamed up to offer young people the chance to learn more about the Ness of Brodgar excavations by taking part in a series of archaeology workshops running this summer. The site is situated in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site.
