Scotland’s drinking dens are being celebrated in a new book charting the different styles and types of traditional pubs. Historic Scotland, working alongside the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), has looked at how some of the most historic public houses in Scotland have survived and developed over the years, the quality of the interior often outshining an anonymous exterior, to create Raising the Bar, An Introduction to Scotland’s Historic Pubs.

Sorting out the knights from the knaves in the 'K' factorMedia Releases
Knight School events – in which ‘knights in armour’ demonstrate for visitors the chivalric code of honesty, bravery, honour and loyalty – have become a popular highlight of Historic Scotland’s annual educational and interpretation programme at leading heritage venues throughout the country. Knights in clash in Linlithgow joustMedia Releases
Knights in armour will be mounting their steeds and reaching for their lances for a spectacular summer joust at Linlithgow Palace. The medieval clash takes place on the weekend of 11 and 12 July, against one of Scotland’s most beautiful historic backdrops. As the knights charge into the fray they will be accompanied by a dramatic soundtrack. Linlithgow Palace was a favourite residence of the Stewart kings and queens, the lands around it and the loch were their playground. But you don’t have to be royalty to enjoy this summer’s display of skill and daring.

Consultation on Listed Buildings ConsentMedia Releases
Culture Minister Michael Russell today (Thursday, 25 June 2009) launched a consultation looking at devolving greater responsibility for listed building consent to local authorities. It follows a successful pilot scheme where Perth and Kinross, Glasgow City and City of Edinburgh councils were able to issue listed building consent for B-listed buildings without the need to notify Historic Scotland.

OBE For Champion Of The Antonine WallMedia Releases
David Breeze, the driving force behind the successful bid for the Antonine Wall to be granted World Heritage Site status, has been awarded an OBE. Dr Breeze, who works for Historic Scotland, is a renowned expert on the history, archaeology and conservation of the all – which once formed the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire.
