Historic Scotland membership numbers hit all time high

Historic Scotland membership numbers are at an all time high with a total of 125,702 members, an increase of 8.8 per cent in comparison with the same time last year.  

Stephen Duncan, Historic Scotland’s Director of Commercial and Tourism said:

"This shows that more than ever, people are recognising the great value Historic Scotland membership represents.  

“At a time when more families than ever are having a Staycation, this is a great way of keeping everyone entertained. With events throughout the year such as living history camps, spectacular  jousting tournaments and battle re-enactments, there is something for everyone to enjoy.  

“We are constantly looking to improve visitors’ experience at our attractions with every penny we make going into looking after and maintaining Scotland’s most important historic sites.

“Stirling Palace recently celebrated the first anniversary of the re-opening of the Palace apartments following a £12m restoration programme.

“Edinburgh Castle has recently refurbished St Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh, the Tea Room and its retail outlets.  In addition, the stories that make the history of Scotland’s number one paid for visitor attraction so fascinating have been re-written following consultation with more than 30 experts including archaeologists and historians to produce colourful and dramatic illustrations reconstructing some of the tempestuous events that helped shape the nation’s history and bring it to life.

“This year we have held various events to commemorate the Year of Creative with Stirling Castle hosting its first ever Artist-in-Residence programme, which proved very popular and was rolled out to several additional sites.

“So make the most of the summer holidays by taking the family to at least one of our sites and captivate the children with the fascinating tales from Scotland's history and heritage which inspired the new Disney film, 'Brave'.

“At a cost of less than £7:00 per month if you pay online, membership gives free entry to more than 70 of our attractions ranging from Edinburgh Castle to Stirling Castle to Duff House, Incholm Abbey and Island and Skara Brae.

”With 2013 celebrating the Year of Natural and 2014 celebrating the Year of Homecoming, there are many reasons why people should take out a membership and enjoy the very best that Scotland has to offer.”
