World heritage site rangers offer special tours to the tourism sector

11 May 2011

The Orkney World Heritage Site (WHS) Ranger service is holding a special event this weekend for the island’s tourism industry.

The rangers are offering free tours on Sunday, 15th May. At 2pm there will be a tour at the Ring of Brodgar and at 3.30 pm there will be a tour at the Standing Stones of Stenness and Barnhouse village, with each tour lasting an hour.

Sandra Miller for the WHS Rangers said;

“We hold tours at the Standing Stones and at the Ring of Brodgar every summer for members of the public which are a fantastic success.

“We wanted to kick off this season by opening them up to businesses operating in the tourism field across the islands who are interested in finding out more about the sites, the surrounding areas and the archaeology and natural heritage.

“The tours are for anyone involved in the tourism industry, from hoteliers through to B & B owners and taxi and bus drivers.

“We very much want to make it a family affair so they are welcome to bring their families along and make an afternoon of it.”

The tours are free and there is no need to book. Interested parties should meet in the car park at Brodgar at 2 pm and at the Standing Stones of Stenness car park at 3.30 pm.

The tours are a prelude to the summer guided walks for members of the public which will begin again on 1st June and will run until the 31st August. The Brodgar walks will run daily at 1pm from the Brodgar car park and the Standing Stones of Stenness and Branhouse will run at 11am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from the Standing Stones of Stenness car park. Both tours are free and there is no need to book.
