Rangers of the world on display

28 July 2008

A special exhibition has been put up in Kirkwall public library to highlight the role of rangers from around the world.

Orkney’s own rangers, Elaine Clarke and Sandra Miller, created the display which looks at the roles of colleagues as far away as Australia, the USA and South Africa.

It has been put up to mark International Ranger Day on Thursday, 31 July.

The day itself will see the Orkney Rangers talking about the role they play in the promotion, conservation and interpretation of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site during their daily 1pm guided walk at the Ring of Brodgar.

Elaine said: “We wanted to highlight the work of fellow rangers all over the world, many of whom face great personal risks in carrying out their duties.

“We contacted rangers we have had the pleasure of meeting while they have been in Orkney, or while we have been on our own travels, and asked them to contribute to our display and I think the result shows the very different roles we all have.

“In Australia they have thousands of acres of parks and reserves with wildlife control and bushfires to tackle.

“In America they also play a part in law enforcement and many carry firearms, while in South Africa’s game reserves they face poachers while protecting the Big Five – lions, rhinos, buffalo, elephants and leopards.”

What they all have in common is a dedication to caring for the world’s natural and cultural heritage.

The library display runs from the July 25 to 2 August.
