Glenrothes Town Art photo competition winners announced

Kenneth O’Keefe won first place in the adult section for his interpretation of the Victorian picture frame in Riverside Park.    “The Audience” sculpture at Newcastle precinct was the subject for Caitlin Donald’s winning entry in the junior category.

The unique public sculptures that help define the character of Glenrothes have attracted a fantastic range of entries in a photo competition organised by Historic Scotland, with the winners announced today.

Photographers young and old submitted entries to a contest that will now be the focus of a six-week public exhibition at Rothes Halls this summer, showcasing the range and breadth of photographic talent from Glenrothes and beyond.

The “My Place” competition was launched after Historic Scotland recognised the importance of Glenrothes public art by listing several sculptures. The agency also produced a free downloadable booklet, offering maps and trails linked to the 140 art works.

Begun in the mid-1960s, the sculptures were integral to the creation of the new Glenrothes community. In a pioneering move, the town’s Development Corporation employed a town artist, breaking new ground in the United Kingdom and sparking widespread interest at home and abroad.

Artists that subsequently became involved were invited to take the Glenrothes message to countries including the USA, Japan and Australia.

The legacy of the project can be seen today in the cultural contribution made by the sculptures, which form an integral part of the modern townscape, and the recent listing of four of the art works by Historic Scotland.

The agency’s Head of Listing and Designed Landscapes, Elizabeth McCrone said: “We are delighted that the Glenrothes town art photo competition has attracted so many entries of such a high standard.

“They reflect the enthusiasm people feel for these special sculptures, which are significant in a Scottish and international context. They range from figurative to abstract, from humorous to contemplative.

“They are also great fun, and make you smile. This is art for everyone, and the response to our competition shows the affection in which they are held.”

The collection ranges from naturalistic figures, such as “The Working Men” by Malcolm Robertson, to huge animal sculptures including “Feeding Hippos” by David Harding and Stanley Bonnar, and abstract works such as “Henge” by David Harding, inspired by the Stonehenge theme and featuring concrete panels decorated with symbols and quotations.

The winning entry in the adult category, taken by Kenneth O’Keefe from Markinch, focused on the Victorian picture frame in Riverside Park, while junior category winner, 14-year-old Caitlin Donald from Glenrothes, chose “The Audience” in the Newcastle precinct as his theme.

Taking second place in the adult category was David McGloin of Glenrothes, and second placed junior Paul Dodds (11), also Glenrothes. Special commendations went to Ian McCracken, Glenrothes and Allan Twiname, Burntisland (adult section), and juniors Jordyn Curtis (11) and Abbie Donald (10), both Glenrothes.

Each first place winner receives a year’s membership to Historic Scotland, plus £50 in vouchers, with second place entries receiving £25 in vouchers and a free single entry to an Historic Scotland property.

Images from the contest will now be displayed in a free public exhibition at the town’s Rothes Halls, between July 2nd and August 9th.
