Scottish Ten website launched

Historic Scotland has launched a new website dedicated to the Scottish Ten project which will digitally scan and capture Scotland’s five World Heritage Sites and five other international historic sites, over the course of five years.  It is being launched simultaneously with the first five minute movie on YouTube which shows footage of the team scanning Mount Rushmore.

                          

The website, now available online at www.scottishten.org showcases the groundbreaking collaborative project being run by Historic Scotland and the Glasgow School of Art

Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture said: “The Scottish Ten project is attracting global interest and putting Scotland firmly on the map as a centre for cutting-edge technology. The scanning will help in the vitally important conservation of key heritage sites for future generations.”

Linda Kong, Historic Scotland’s Digital Manager added: “We had incredible images to work with so we wanted the website to reflect the strong visual nature of the Scottish Ten project. A priority was to create a scaleable website that could easily grow to capture the rest of the Scottish Ten journey and to showcase its pioneering work.”

The website is designed to be a central resource with all the information you need to know about the Scottish Ten.  Packed full of pictures, information and scans, it explains in detail about the project and the process of digital scanning.

• Information on all the cutting-edge technology being used

The joint commercial venture between Historic Scotland and the Glasgow School of Art is known as The Centre for Digital Documentation and Visualisation.

Five Unesco world heritage sites are being scanned in Scotland:

• The Antonine Wall
• New Lanark
• Neolithic Orkney
• Old and New Towns of Edinburgh
• Island of St Kilda

Five other international sites will be scanned over the next four years. The first site so far has been Mount Rushmore and others will include sites in India, China and Japan.
