Local kids group to explore mystery at the mills thanks to former worker

21 July 2010

Stanley Mills is running a series of activity days for children during the school holidays with the help of one of its former workers.

John Robertson, who used to work at the site as a mechanic, is returning to his old place of work to take part in a new activity for school holiday clubs entitled ‘The Mystery of the Missing Mechanic’.

Designed to provide children with the opportunity to learn first hand about life at the mill, the activity sees the children turn detective to locate the missing mechanic on site. As part of the activity, they are given clues to locate John and along the way find out more about the role of mechanics at the Mill by using the different education panels on site. The activity then ends with a session where John tells them about life at Stanley when it was a working mill.

Fiona Davidson, Education Officer said: “We held a very successful pilot exercise earlier this month which went down a storm with the children. By involving previous workers it helps brings the site to life for them in a very vivid way, and allows them not only to find out more about an individual’s job, but also how they contributed to the overall working of this important site.

“The activity is about learning in a fun, informative way and can be adapted for different ages so is a great way to keep the kids entertained during the holidays, whilst learning more about their heritage.”

The next activity day at Stanley Mills is Wednesday 28th July.
