How to find what is scheduled

There are two ways to locate scheduled monuments:

Search by keyword, name, council, classification

Current information on monuments contained in the Schedule is available from Historic Scotland’s data website.

Here you can download maps and copies of the legal documentation for each scheduled monument and our designation spatial datasets for GIS use, as well as find out about other types of designation, such as Listing.

Search by map on PASTMAP

PASTMAP is a website where you can display and search information on Scotland's historic environment.

  • Displays the boundaries of scheduled monuments; download copies of legal schedules.
  • Search by zooming into the map, selecting from a list of place names or by using postcodes.

Designated Sites (Historic Scotland)

  • scheduled monuments
  • listed buildings
  • inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes
  • inventory of historic battlefields
  • designated wreck sites

National and local records of sites

  • The database of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), one of Scotland’s National Collections
  • Sites and Monuments Records / Historic Environment Records (from select local authorities)

Please note that scheduling gives no rights of public access. Nor does it change the wide-ranging provisions for public access in the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Members of the public, and this includes archaeology students or professionals, should always seek permission from the owner and/or occupier in the normal way.
