The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS)
holds records and information relating to over 250,000 archaeological sites, monuments, buildings, industries and maritime sites in Scotland.
RCAHMS, which was founded in 1908, is recognised as being one of Scotland’s National Collections
. Access to its collections, which were until recently known as The National Monuments Record of Scotland, can be achieved either by visiting its library in person, or by searching its catalogues and database online via Canmore.
There are currently over 80,000 digital images of photographs, drawings, texts and manuscripts available online through Canmore
, and this figure is constantly increasing through the work of field survey teams and scanning programmes, and as a result of donations and strategic acquisitions. Geospatial information is also available online through PASTMAP
, an Historic Scotland / RCAHMS partnership project.
