Culture Minister, Michael Russell, today (Thursday, 27 August) visited New Lanark to see the digital documentation of the world heritage site taking place. A team from Historic Scotland and Glasgow School of Art began scanning the site this month as part of the Scottish Governments project to digitally document the country's five World Heritage Sites, and five international heritage sites, creating what will be known as the Scottish 10.

Culture Minister Michael Russell visited one of the country’s finest Palladian houses today to see how it is being made safe and providing invaluable training opportunities. Since it was gutted by fire in 1899, Penicuik House, designed by Sir James Clerk, has stood as a ruin, but its consolidation is providing apprentices with vital experience of traditional building skills. The Minister said: “This is an incredible house, and we will get a double benefit by investing in its repair. Maintaining it will ensure that the community can continue to enjoy the estate, but it will also provide invaluable training on a large scale."

Minister for Culture, the Constitution and External Affairs Michael Russell has congratulated Historic Scotland as its membership figures hit 100,000 for the first time. The record-breaking numbers have been achieved following a special offer on Historic Scotland membership. The offer was a key component of the agency’s contribution to the 2009 Year of Homecoming. The aim was to give Scottish people and families the opportunity to see Historic Scotland’s properties and events, all year long. The offer, which was promoted through a major marketing campaign, gave 18 months’ membership for the price of 12. In addition to the 6 free months, membership with Historic Scotland - for a whole family costs only £6.16 a month.

A new oak jetty will be built at Urquhart Castle this winter to provide easier access for visitors arriving on Loch Ness cruise boats. Boats are currently using a temporary pontoon which was put in place by Historic Scotland after an inspection of the existing jetty found it was no longer fit for purpose.
