Young volunteers tell story of the past at Linlithgow Palace

19 July 2011

Young volunteers from Linlithgow will  be stepping back in time again this summer to become costumed guides at Linlithgow Palace.

Dressed in  16th Century-style costumes they will bring to life many of the stories associated with the Palace - most famously known as the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

This long-standing local partnership complements Historic Scotland’s Junior Guides Scheme, which operates at a number of its attractions, including the Palace. The Junior Guide Scheme, which supports the delivery of Curriculum for Excellence, sees local school children deliver tours of ‘their’ historic site to visiting school groups.

Many of the young volunteers who will be guiding at Linlithgow Palace this summer are former junior guides who are keen to maintain their links with the site.

Alan Mowat, Manager of Linlithgow Palace said;

“It is great that Linlithgow’s young people, many of them former junior guides, are once again volunteering over the summer to tell the story of the Palace to our wider visitors.

“The Palace is steeped in history and these tours are a fantastic way to tell the different aspects of its fascinating story. This year we mark the 450th anniversary of Mary Queen of Scots’ return to Scotland so it is a great opportunity to find out about the Palace if you have never been before.”

Tours will run at the Palace every day except Sundays throughout July and most of August. Pre-booking is not required. For further information please contact the Palace on 01506 842896.
