Visitors to Stanley Mills to enjoy its natural heritage

16 June 2011

Visitors to Stanley Mills will be able to explore the site’s natural heritage during a series of special events to be held this weekend.

The ‘Nature Weekend’ will see a whole host of interactive activities for all the family across both Saturday and Sunday to celebrate the role of the natural environment surrounding the site.

The weekend will allow visitors to find out more about the animals who inhabit the Tay and their habitats – particularly the four most iconic animals associated with the river– otters, swifts, bats and salmon. As part of this, visitors will have a chance to take part in a national swift survey of the Mill buildings on the saturday afternoon.

Historic Scotland Rangers will also lead woodland walks and hold bug hunts throughout the weekend as well as offering a story telling session on the Sunday at lunchtime. The rangers will also provide information about the meadow & associated plant life of the area.

Meanwhile, younger visitors will also get the opportunity to make crafts to take home or display on site.

Emily Copland, for Stanley Mills said,

“The mill sits on the banks of the river and would have been totally dependant on the river for power when it was a working mill.

“But it has also shared the natural environment with the local wildlife which brings another dynamic to the site.

“The mill has been preserved, however the natural environment is evolving and this event is designed to let visitors find out more about the diverse wildlife that is part of the Mill’s story.”

The Nature Weekend will run from Saturday 18th – Sunday 19th June from 10.30 to 4.30. Event activities are taking place throughout the day and are free when paying admission to Stanley Mills. For further information contact the Mill on 01738 828 268.
