Auchinleck Academy gets taste of traditional building skills
 
First year pupils at Auchinleck Academy were given the opportunity to try their hand at traditional building skills at the school on 21st and 22nd September.

Historic Scotland’s stonemasons, carpenters, slaters, lead workers and brick workers will be taking part in two activity days where the pupils will get expert tuition in traditional building skills.

David Mitchell, Historic Scotland’s Director of Conservation Group said:

“This is a great way of showing the importance of traditional building skills to young people. What’s more, they can see first hand the skills involved and how important it is to maintain these vital skills in order to preserve Scotland’s built heritage. It may also inspire some of them to take up one of these professions and look after Scotland’s heritage for future generations.”
Martin Hendry, teacher at Auchinleck Academy added:  “This is an excellent way for our pupils to find out more about traditional building skills and an opportunity to sample possibly career paths they may like to pursue,  Vocational training also fits in perfectly with the Curriculum for Excellence giving pupils practical work and skills related training.”
