Visitors to Arbroath Abbey will have the opportunity to explore the site’s links to its maritime past at a special series of events to be held during the month of March. The Abbey, which is run by Historic Scotland, is running a series of workshops to celebrate the bicentenary of the Bell Rock Lighthouse. From the 13th century, the abbey provided a vital focal point for sailors in the North Sea.

The magnificent early Georgian mansion Duff House offers a fascinating insight into its dramatic World War II past – when the Adam-designed mansion served as a military base and prisoner of war camp - at a special event next weekend. During the WWII Weekend on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th February visitors to Duff House will have an opportunity to join historian Allan Burnett on a captivating fact-filled tour of the grand 18th century property. Allan will talk about its occupation by the military during the conflict, what happened when the house was bombed in July 1940, and what life was like for the German seamen and Luftwaffe pilots who were imprisoned there .

Edinburgh’s most popular green space, Holyrood Park, is welcoming families to come along next week to discover and try out a variety of ancient skills and handicrafts that were once commonplace in Ancient Britain. The Rangers Service based at the park is inviting visitors of all ages to the Education Centre on Queen’s Drive on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th, from 11am to 3pm, for ‘Hands On Holyrood: Prehistoric Pursuits’.

Nick Finnigan has been appointed as Executive Manager of Edinburgh Castle, taking over from Barbara Smith. Nick has worked in Historic Scotland since 1989. His extensive experience within the organisation includes managing corporate hospitality, catering, membership and weddings. In his previous role as Events and Filming Manager, Nick was responsible for the organisation of the packed events programme that entertains the millions of visitors to Historic Scotland’s 345 sites each year.
