Historic Scotland’s Free Weekend is Back. Historic Scotland announce the dates for their ever-popular Free Weekend as it returns for another year. For one weekend only, on 12 and 13 April 2008, the doors, drawbridges, hatches, portcullises and gates on over 70 attractions will open to the public for free, as Historic Scotland encourages visitors to discover more about the nation’s fascinating past.

Nine dilapidated churches across the country are to be repaired thanks to over £1.3 million funding package announced today by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland. Each of important architectural merit, the churches make a significant contribution to their town’s identity, and in Falkirk’s case, its name, while providing a hub for local people to meet and share interests.

Policy on the consent process for the country’s 8,000 Scheduled Monuments has been launched by Scottish Ministers today (Monday, 17 March). The Scottish Historic Environment Policy (SHEP) sets out Minister’s policies on works affecting scheduled monuments, which are archaeological sites, buildings and structures of national importance.
