D-Day Landings Map at Trinity House
5 June 2014
Ahead of the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings on 6 June, Jill van Millingen, Regional Collections Manager at Historic Scotland examines a 1944 chart showing the French coast around Arromanche, Normandy, where the landings took place.
The chart, which is on display at Trinity House in Edinburgh, shows the landing area code-named Gold Beach which was assaulted and taken from defending German troops by units of the British 50th Infantry Division.
The chart states that it is for “Official Use Only” and that its contents are not to be communicated directly or indirectly to the press or to any person not holding an official position in HM Service. Shown on the chart are 15 circular sea areas each marked with the type of shipping which was to anchor there.
