Comic creator legend at special Edinburgh Castle event
13 January 2009
Historic Scotland Edinburgh Castle is hosting a special event this Saturday, 17th
January, to welcome comic creating legend David Donaldson. Donaldson will be presenting a latest
Broons escapade – Broons Burns Night – and signing Broons copies for visitors.
Donaldson is a veteran contributor to some of Britain’s best loved characters. A
script writer and editor since 1962, his work has included the Beezer, Topper, Beano and the Dandy.
In addition, he was responsible for originating a series of famous faces for the Nutty comic in
1980 including the much loved Bananaman – a character who still enjoys cult status to this day.
David Donaldson’s mainstay however has always been the Broons and Oor Wullie, working
on the much loved characters for several decades.
This Broons adventure – Broons Burns Night – has arrived in time for the celebrated
poets birthday on 25th January. This is also the year of Homecoming. 250 years after Rabbie
Burns’ birth, Homecoming 2009 celebrates some of Scotland’s greatest contributions to the world: Burns,
golf, whisky, the enlightenment and innovation and Scotland’s culture and heritage.
The event at Edinburgh Castle this Saturday 17th brings together many of these elements
together with one of Scotland’s most famous fictional families. Visitors will also have the chance
to have their photo taken with a life size cut out group of the family and Rabbie Burns.
Rebecca Hamilton, Marketing and Media Manager at Historic Scotland said:
"We always have a wide range of events throughout Historic Scotland attractions.
This event - Broons and Burns at Edinburgh Castle - offers a fantastic opportunity for people
to meet the man behind the Broons - the legendary David Donaldson and understand a little more about
Scotland’s great poet, Robert Burns. David will be doing book signings throughout the day. It
is also a chance to sample some of our favourite Scottish treats. We are providing some lively
ceilidh music, plenty of haggis, whisky and shortbread tastings, lots of laughter and a few surprises.
And, it’s great value as it is all included in admission price to Edinburgh Castle."
