Historic Scotland’s costumed performers go ‘on tour’
8 July 2013
Historic Scotland yesterday held the first in a series of themed events which will take place at sites across the country throughout the summer. This year, their famous costumed performers are going ‘on tour’, visiting Blackness, Tantallon, Craignethan and Craigmillar Castles.
The ‘Men at Arms’ summer tour, which kicked off at Blackness Castle yesterday, will allow visitors to get hands-on with history, as they get the chance to meet a medieval soldier or try their hand at archery.
Throughout July, costumed performers will demonstrate arms and armour, allowing visitors to feel the weight of it or have a go with a 14-foot-long pike. In August they will be able to have a go at archery and learn more about the bow and weapons typically used by a medieval archer.
Furthermore St Andrew’s Castle is playing host to ‘Faith, Fire and Faction’ this summer. The Reformation had far-reaching effects and did much to shape the nation in the 1500’s and beyond. On alternating Sundays throughout July and August Historic Scotland presents both sides of the story, with Cardinal Beaton defending the established church and Beaton of Balfour arguing the case for the new reformed faith.
Anna Pugh, Assistant Events Manager at Historic Scotland said: “Historic Scotland’s costumed performers are hugely popular with visitors so we wanted to introduce them to a wider audience by sending them on tour. They help to bring history to life and to give a broader sense of what life was once like at these castles. From armoury demonstrations to archery, they are sure to enhance the visitor experience this summer.”Notes for editors:
