ancient monument grants

Iron age fort
The Ancient Monuments Grants programme provides financial assistance to help preserve and maintain monuments, and in some cases to present them to the public.

Who can apply?

Grants can be offered to owners of monuments, land managers or to other bodies acting with the owners written approval.

Criteria for awarding grants

Funds are limited, so priority is given to monuments of particular interest or importance. We encourage owners to look into other sources of funding at the same time to make sure their monument is well taken care of.

It is normally expected that, for projects other than very small ones, a qualified and experienced professional (usually an architect or conservator) will be engaged by the applicant to supervise the work.

When the monument to be grant-aided is scheduled - as it is usually the case - the grant offer will usually also contain the necessary scheduled monument consent and any conditions relating to it.

This means that a programme of works has to be drawn up and submitted to Historic Scotland and a grant offer and/or consent letter issued before any work can begin on site.
