Most archaeological work supported by Historic Scotland is linked to threatened monuments and ancient landscapes. These threats range from natural ones like coastal erosion to human activities such as road building, or agricultural activity like ploughing.  Nowadays a wide range of approaches are used to recover, record and preserve our archaeological heritage – some are outlined in the pages below.
