Some of Scotland’s most skilled embroiderers have completed majestic unicorns and eagles as part of the heraldry to be displayed in Stirling’s royal palace. The work involved detailed research and expert design followed by months of delicate cutting, shaping and sewing to recreate the heraldry of Mary of Guise, the widowed queen who resided at the palace in the 1540s.

A new booklet which looks at the architects and styles of Scotland’s theatres is being launched today, Tuesday 8th March at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal. Written by Historic Scotland and the Theatres Trust, the booklet looks at theatre design from 1736 up until the late twentieth century, ranging from Victorian opulence and Edwardian designs to 20th century conversions and post-war theatres.

Historic Scotland’s Retail Team have scooped the top prize at the Association of Cultural Enterprises (ACE) Awards in Cardiff. The agency beat off competition from heritage attractions and museums from across the UK, as the “Symbols of Scotland” range of products was awarded the “Best Retail Product 2010”, at the annual ACE Awards Ceremony, held at the National Museum Cardiff.

Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop and Tourism Minister Jim Mather are offering young people across Scotland the opportunity to take the reigns at one of the countries top tourist attractions. Historic Scotland is teaming up with Springboard Scotland to mark Scottish Tourism Careers Week (Feb 28 – Mar 7) to encourage young people with an interest in tourism and hospitality to enter a new competition The Keys to the Castle Challenge.

The great ticket giveaway enables free admission on either Saturday 12th or Sunday 13th March to a huge range of outstanding historic properties and sites throughout Scotland. These include leading visitor attractions including Stirling and Urquhart Castles, Fort George, Linlithgow Palace, the Border Abbeys, and Skara Brae.
