Nominations open for Young Scot "Heritage Hero" award 2012Media Releases
Historic Scotland has launched a national drive to recognise and celebrate the young “Heritage Heroes” who give their time selflessly to protect, maintain and support the nation’s historic environment. In conjunction with the Young Scot scheme, the agency is asking people to nominate deserving youngsters for this prestigious award, which joins 12 other categories in the annual contest that culminates in a lavish prize-giving ceremony in April.

Urquhart Castle welcomes highest number of visitors in one seasonMedia Releases
Urquhart Castle has welcomed its highest number of visitors in one season. The castle, on the banks of Loch Ness, saw 300,000 visitors go through its gates in the period from 1st April 2011 until 3rd January 2012, the highest number of visitors to ever visit the property. The figures have been driven by both walk up and trade visits, and the consolidation of a number of partnership led activities in the region.

Human history "time capsule" on remote Scottish islandMedia Releases
The vanished lives of our ancestors on a remote Scottish island from thousands of years ago have been revealed by archaeologists. From Machair to Mountains shows how experts uncovered a series of virtual “time capsules” on South Uist in the form of ancient settlements preserved under sand dunes dating from the Bronze Age to the modern era, during a major project undertaken with grant aid from Historic Scotland.
