Over a million annual visitors hit Edinburgh Castle. Edinburgh Castle has retained its position as the number one paid for visitor attraction in Scotland according to figures released today (Tuesday 23 February). The castle saw 1,196,481 visitors through its door, a 6 per cent increase on this time last year.

The intriguing history of Govan was today revealed in a book, Historic Govan: Archaeology and Development, launched by Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture at the Pearce Institute in Govan. The book is the latest in the Scottish Burgh Surveys produced by Historic Scotland and the Council for British Archaeology. Written by Dr Chris Dalglish and Professor Stephen T Driscoll, it is a guide to understanding Govan’s rich history and archaeology. It looks at the significance of Govan’s heritage including details of important sites, buildings and areas of potential.

Give yourself some space this weekend – come star-gazing at Holyrood Park and learn all about the wonders of the night skies over the capital city. The Historic Scotland Ranger Service, which cares for the Park, has joined forces with experts from the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh to host a unique, inter-active astronomy event this Saturday, 27th February. ‘Dark Skies’ takes place in the Holyrood Park Education Centre and at its two sessions - from 2pm to 5.30pm and from 7pm to 9pm - you’ll have the opportunity to learn how to locate and identify planets, stars and galaxies, and to discover why the Park is such a great place to star-gaze. There’s also a chance to enjoy hands-on activities such as comet making, rocket launching and meteorite handling, and to experience an interactive inflatable star-lab.

As Stephen Driscoll’s excellent work shows, Govan Old Parish Church is a potent symbol of community and continuity. The tombs, stones and other monuments it contains are simply breathtaking."
