Building on Scotland's architectural legacyMedia Releases
Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop will today (Wednesday) outline how important our traditional building materials are in promoting sustainability and supporting the construction industry in difficult times. Addressing the two-day Building Scotland conference looking at traditional building materials and skills, the Minister also highlighted how the skills used to work and build with these materials are still needed. The Minister said: “We should not underestimate how significant the contribution our historic buildings make to the economy. More than half of the money invested in construction annually goes on existing buildings rather than new builds."

Young hotshots put Scotland in focusMedia Releases
TWO young photographers gave Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop a special sneak preview of their winning images that will soon be seen in more than 40 countries around Europe. Aksel Hampson (7) of St Peter’s RC School and Christian Deeming (11) of Robert Gordon’s College Junior School, both in Aberdeen, showed their winning images to the Minister at Edinburgh Castle today (Tuesday).

Edinburgh Castle has retained its position as the number one paid for visitor attraction in Scotland according to figures released today (Tuesday 23 February). The castle saw 1,196,481 visitors through its door, a 6 per cent increase on this time last year.

Govan's rich history revealedMedia Releases
The intriguing history of Govan was today revealed in a book, Historic Govan: Archaeology and Development, launched by Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture at the Pearce Institute in Govan. The book is the latest in the Scottish Burgh Surveys produced by Historic Scotland and the Council for British Archaeology. Written by Dr Chris Dalglish and Professor Stephen T Driscoll, it is a guide to understanding Govan’s rich history and archaeology. It looks at the significance of Govan’s heritage including details of important sites, buildings and areas of potential.
