Historic Scotland and Royal Mail agree policy on protecting listed post boxes
29 March 2007
Historic Scotland and Royal Mail have today (Thurs) signed a joint agreement setting out the company’s policy for protecting post boxes of historical importance.
The agreement replicates a joint policy drawn up and signed by Royal Mail and English Heritage in 2002, which established the procedure under which Royal Mail deals with historically sensitive post boxes.
Royal Mail and Historic Scotland have adhered to the agreement over the past five years, but today sees the formal signing of this policy.
Royal Mail already has a policy of only removing or relocating post boxes if absolutely necessary for legal or operational reasons. When a box has to be removed it will, where possible, be given to a local museum or placed with the Royal Mail Heritage Collection.
There are currently 78 listed post boxes in Scotland, of a variety of different types.
Ian McKay, Scottish Affairs Director of Royal Mail Group, said: “I am delighted to have agreed this joint policy statement with Historic Scotland. Although this simply reinforces the existing Royal Mail policy for handling issues in relation to historical post boxes, it is extremely important for us to have the full endorsement and support of Historic Scotland.
“Royal Mail has great respect for the historical value and heritage of its post boxes and we look forward to working closely with Historic Scotland on any issues which arise in this area.”
Malcolm Cooper, Historic Scotland Chief Inspector, added: “Red post boxes are an iconic image of Britain. They are entirely functional, but at the same time add character - and in many cases a dash of colour - to our streetscape.
“I welcome the formalisation of this agreement on the management of a prominent historic resource. Royal Mail’s commitment to ensuring that the boxes continue to play a part in the communities they have served when they are no longer needed shows a recognition of their contribution.”
