An insight into 16th century life - and a royal scandal and murder plot

Aspects of life in 16th century Scotland come under the spotlight in a colourful event at Dirleton Castle this weekend. From the political plotting and royal scandals of the period, to the weaponry, crafts, pastimes and fashions of the mid-1500s, the event on Sunday 8th August provides a fascinating insight into this pivotal era in our country’s history. From 12 noon to 4.00pm, visitors to Dirleton will be treated to a lively and varied programme of 16th- century themed entertainment from a cast of talented costumed performers.

Kids trail launched at Dumbarton Castle

Historic Scotland has launched a new kids adventure trail at Dumbarton Castle. Local children Keiran Johnson, five, from Paisley and Luke Callanin also five, from Renton were the first to try the adventure trail which takes in five key areas across the site. Designed to give children the opportunity to engage more with the historical environment, the trail follows the ‘secret survival’ theme and looks at how the castle’s natural defences helped it when it was under attack, and why it was such an important site for the West of Scotland.
