First Minister announces details of Renaissance Royal Palace Opening Event

First Minister Alex Salmond has revealed details of a weekend of celebrations to mark the opening of Stirling Castle’s Renaissance royal palace after a £12 million refurbishment. He made the announcement during a visit to the palace where he saw the first of the original 16th-century Stirling Heads being prepared for display in a specially-created gallery on the upper floor.

Young Photographers Open Exhibition

Seven-year-old Samuel Eatough and Sarah Cowie (14) are the stars of a photo exhibition being opened this week by Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop. The pair saw off 316 other entries from primary and secondary schools across Scotland to be named winners of the PhotoArch heritage photography competition, run by the Scottish Civic Trust.

There has been an excellent response to the special promotion which - in addition to the 50% discounted tickets to Edinburgh Castle - offered thousands of free tickets to a range of Scotland’s finest heritage attractions on Saturday 12th or Sunday 13th March. All 5,000 of the free tickets to some 44 historic sites throughout the country have now been snapped up by on-line applicants.

Unicorns and Eagles herald new era for Stirling Castle's renaissance palace

Some of Scotland’s most skilled embroiderers have completed majestic unicorns and eagles as part of the heraldry to be displayed in Stirling’s royal palace. The work involved detailed research and expert design followed by months of delicate cutting, shaping and sewing to recreate the heraldry of Mary of Guise, the widowed queen who resided at the palace in the 1540s.

Scotland's theatre architecture revealed in new publication

A new booklet which looks at the architects and styles of Scotland’s theatres is being launched today, Tuesday 8th March at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal. Written by Historic Scotland and the Theatres Trust, the booklet looks at theatre design from 1736 up until the late twentieth century, ranging from Victorian opulence and Edwardian designs to 20th century conversions and post-war theatres.
