Historic Scotland launches nationwide egg painting competition to create a Scottish Leggend. Children across Scotland are being invited to get their creative (egg) heads on over the next few weeks as part of a nationwide Easter competition organised by Historic Scotland. The ‘Create a Scottish Leggend’ competition will be launched at Edinburgh Castle on Thursday 22 March 2007, giving children just four weeks to turn an egg into one of their favourite historical characters or places.
Whether it’s Robegg the Bruce, William Wallace (Braveyolk), Mary Queen of Shells, Bonny ‘hard-boiled’ Prince Charlie or Mons Egg, options are endless! Open to children aged 16 years or under, entrants must send a photo of their eggy creation to the Historic Scotland Scottish Leggends Gallery. The winner will receive a mound of Historic Scotland goodies including family membership and a VIP trip to Scotland’s top attraction.

Our attractions represent a significant part of Scottish history and so many colourful characters and places – providing a child’s imagination with plenty of material! We hope this competition is a lot of fun but will also inspire children to think about their fascinating historical past, the real legends involved and get outdoors this spring to explore it all.’
Entries should be sent to the Historic Scotland Scottish Leggends Gallery, Longmore House Salisbury Place, Edinburgh, EH9 1SH by 16 April 2007. All entries should enclose a photo of their egg (along with the title of what or whom it represents), their name, address and telephone number.
The egg painting competition is part of many activities happening at Historic Scotland attractions over the Easter holidays. From 31 March until 7 April 2007, Edinburgh Castle will embark on An Easter Adventure, where visitors can enjoy a daily programme of comedy characters, puppetry and magic. On Easter Sunday and Monday (8 and 9 April), Stirling Castle will be hosting its popular Easter Extravaganza, which will see the return of the evil Baron Hardegg and his incompetent assistant, Squire Softboiled in an historically inspired comedy show. An Easter Adventure is at Edinburgh Castle every day from Saturday 31 March until Saturday 7 April, from 12noon to 4.00pm each day. Normal admission rates apply. Edinburgh Castle is open from 9.30am until 6.00pm.

Egg Painting will be available from 1.00pm-3.00pm at Doune Castle (Easter Monday), Castle Campbell (Easter Sunday and Monday), Aberdour Castle (Easter Sunday and Monday), Melrose Abbey (Easter Sunday and Monday), Fort George (Easter Sunday and Monday), Craigmillar Castle (all Easter weekend), Dirleton Castle (all Easter weekend) and Jedburgh Abbey (all Easter weekend).
