ConstructionSkills award of £600,000 will promote traditional building skills

ConstructionSkills, the training council for the UK construction industry, has awarded £600,000 to Historic Scotland to help the agency promote traditional building skills.

The announcement was made as Historic Scotland celebrated Scottish Apprenticeship Week with events showcasing traditional building skills at Edinburgh Castle.

The funding was welcomed by the Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop.

She said: “This award of £600,000 from ConstructionSkills will help Historic Scotland support the Scottish Government’s traditional skills strategy, which recognises the importance of these skills in maintaining existing buildings and contributing to sustainable economic growth.

“The historic environment, which includes more than 400,000 traditionally-constructed buildings, is worth more than £2.3 billion to the economy every year. The award will help ensure this asset is maintained and preserved for future generations.”

Historic Scotland is the country’s biggest single employer of traditional building skills apprentices.

ConstructionSkills works in partnership with CITB-Construction Skills, the Industrial Training Board for the construction industry in Scotland, England and Wales. Together, they ensure that sector employers have the right skills, by investing funds and providing a range of industry-led training programmes.
