Orkney voices come together at the Ring of Brodgar

14 June 2010

People from across Orkney will be coming together at the Ring of Brodgar next Monday (21st June) as part of the Orkney Heritage Society’s  ‘Year o’ Orkney’ dialect.

A special ‘Voices in the Landscape’ event has been organised by Historic Scotland’s Ranger service which will celebrate the island’s rich literary and cultural traditions in this iconic landscape through the voices of local people including Harvey Johnston, Cameron Stout, Sheila Garson, Neil Leask and Raggi Ljosland.

These well known Orkney voices will be talking on a variety of topics including the Saga’s, St Magnus, old Orkney traditions, the land and memories of Orkney childhoods. The walkers will also be joined by the ‘Song Shop Choir’ who will perform a selection of traditional music.

The event is designed to coincide with the longest day and will allow visitors and locals alike the opportunity to enjoy local voices whilst taking inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of the Ring of Brodgar.

Elaine Clarke, Orkney Ranger said;

“Our Ring of Brodgar walks are very popular and we were keen to do something to celebrate the very successful ‘Year o’ Orkney’ dialect being run by the Heritage Society.

“We are thrilled to have sR many people taking part – and look forward to what should be an extremely enjoyable and memorable evening.”

The event is free and does not require prior booking. Interested parties should meet at the Ring of Brodgar car park at 6pm on Monday. For further information call the rangers on 01856 841732.
