The Museum at Meigle displays 26 pictish carved stones dating from the late eighth to the late tenth centuries.

Making up one of the most important collections of early medieval sculpture in Western Europe, they are all that survives of a centre of Pictish wealth and patronage.

Highlights

Cross-slab Meigle 1 – the oldest stone in the collection, late 8th century and covered with Pictish symbols, horsemen and animals.
Cross-slab Meigle 2 – a great 9th-century prayer cross that once stood beside the entrance into the churchyard.
Recumbent graveslab Meigle 26 – a gravemarker ornately and enigmatically decorated with animals and birds, horsemen and naked humans.
Rare architectural fragments – no Pictish church architecture survives, so these fragments from Meigle are particularly important. They point to a building of some sophistication.
