Smailholm Tower

Well-preserved 15th century rectangular tower

Smailholm Tower

Home to the Pringles and Scotts, Smailholm is a prominent landmark that proved inspirational to Sir Walter Scott who is buried at nearby Dryburgh Abbey.

  • The stunning views from the battlements.
  • The completeness of the 15th-century laird’s residence – the roofed and floored four-storey tower house together with the adjacent buildings and barmkin (courtyard) wall.
  • The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border exhibition in the tower house – costume figures and tapestries of extraordinary charm and captivating interest illustrating the intimate link between Smailhom, Scott and his Minstrelsy.
