Monument Conservation Unit at St Andrews Castle

13 March 2014

As the most recent phase of work on the castle to conserve the historic masonry nears completion, the team from Historic Scotland took advantage of the innovative buttress scaffolding to re-gild this majestic copper and brass weather vane on top of the Fore Tower gable.

Technical Conservation Officer Alan Simpson carried out the gilding work on the weather vane, whilst training Ian Thomson from St Andrew’s Monument Conservation Unit on the methodologies involved.
