Historic Scotland Foundation

You can play a role in preserving and enhancing Scotland’s historic built heritage for future generations by making a donation to the Historic Scotland Foundation.

The Historic Scotland Foundation is an independent charity, established in 2001 to support the work of Historic Scotland. Every donation and legacy made to the Foundation is used to help maintain, preserve and enhance Scotland’s built heritage, including ancient monuments, archaeological sites, historic buildings, parks, gardens and designed landscapes. Donations and legacies also help to fund educational and interpretational activities at historic sites across Scotland, promoting access to Scotland’s built heritage in new and exciting ways.

The Foundation helps Historic Scotland to carry out work which could not otherwise be funded as part of Historic Scotland’s day-to-day activity.

How can I give?

The Historic Scotland Foundation is able to receive gifts from individuals, companies, grant-making trusts and other organisations. If you are a UK taxpayer, your donation to the Historic Scotland Foundation will be eligible for Gift Aid, increasing the value of your donation by 25%. You can download a Gift Aid donation form here.

In addition, legacies can be left to the Historic Scotland Foundation in your will. Legacies to the Historic Scotland Foundation are exempt from Inheritance Tax and a legacy of 10% or more of your estate to the Foundation will reduce the rate of IHT payable on the rest of your estate from 40% to 36%. For further details on how to leave a legacy to the Historic Scotland Foundation, contact us or speak to your solicitor.

Every donation and legacy helps the Foundation to secure Scotland’s built heritage for the future, and to promote interpretation and education: every gift is important to us. It is possible to make a general donation or legacy to the Foundation to be spent on the greatest priorities for Historic Scotland: but it is also possible to select a particular project for support. It is always best to discuss with the Foundation what options are available – please contact us if you would like to discuss the various options available.

What have previous donations and legacies been used for?

Donations and legacies have funded all kinds of work, both great and small, across the length and breadth of Scotland. Here are a few examples of what legacies and donations have achieved in the recent past:-

  • A major project at Stirling Castle to create a replica set of 15th Century Flemish tapestries for the Royal Apartments, and the refurbishment of the Royal Palace;
  • Community education projects at Trinity House of Leith;
  • Important state-of-the-art digitisation and imaging work at properties across Scotland;
  • Support for Iona Abbey, Inchcolm Abbey and Edzell Castle Gardens;
  • Enhancement of the One O’Clock Gun exhibition at Edinburgh Castle;
  • Environmental studies at Maes Howe, Orkney.
