Following a £1 million award from the Heritage Lottery Fund to the Technical Conservation Group and further funding from other bodies (Historic Environment Scotland, Scottish Enterprise Glasgow), The HLF Training Bursary Scheme was established.

170 training opportunities will be divided up into one month satellite training bursaries to take up the new National Progression Award (NPA) Award in Conservation Masonry, and one year placements with other partners.

The focus of the training will be on traditional masonry construction with a particular focus on repair and maintenance. The project has significant potential to raise quality and standards in Scotland.

Applications are competitive and require suitable vocational skills or skills development potential.

Traditional Skills Bursary Schemes

As part of the delivery of Scottish Government’s Traditional Skills Strategy, Historic Environment Scotland currently runs two bursary schemes, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Skills for the Past and Future Project

The purpose of this project is to provide funding to enable individuals to be placed alongside experienced craft, engineering or surveying professionals to develop the skills and gain the work place experience that they will require to service the future needs of the built environment.

The placements are hosted by an organisation or individual that can provide real work-place experience in an area where traditional skills are under threat or where new skills and techniques have been identified that will assist in the better understanding and management of the historic environment.

Conservation of Masonry Bursary Scheme

Historic Environment Scotland has succeeded in securing funding from HLF to extend the Conservation of Masonry Bursary Scheme. The current economic climate has had a devastating effect on the construction sector in the UK and the Heritage sector has not been exempt from this down turn.

The Heritage Lottery Fund Bursary Scheme has allowed additional numbers to be up skilled by gaining the National Progression Award Conservation of Masonry, giving them a real advantage when looking for an apprenticeship or work within the traditional masonry sector.

Applications are competitive and require suitable vocational skills or skills development potential.
