Ian joined Historic Scotland as Chief Operating Officer in June 2011.
Previously Ian joined the Civil Service in Whitehall in 1987 before moving to the Scottish Office in Edinburgh in 1993. He has been involved in a number of high profile projects including leading the Scotland Bill team in 1997-98, heading the first Scottish Cabinet Secretariat in 1999-2000, leading the planning for Scottish Executive involvement in the G8 summit at Gleneagles in 2005, and setting up Scottish Resilience within the Scottish Government in 2008 to co-ordinate emergency planning and response across Scotland.
Away from work Ian is married with two children, plays squash, enjoys walking and cycling in Scotland's hills, and is a member of St James church in Leith.
