Introduction

Gretna has a unique place in Scotland’s story. Created to provide
housing and a community for the workers at a unique First World War munitions factory, the streets and
buildings of the town have come to form an important and lasting architectural legacy.
The
town’s design was overseen by one of the most influential town planners in early 20th-century Britain,
Raymond Unwin. This webpage celebrates Gretna’s architecture and looks at the planning which went into
creating the town. Some of the buildings have been given listed status by Historic Scotland.
