Historic Scotland recognises that many historic properties can present difficulties for people with disabilities.

To help you prepare for your visit, each property detail page in our website provides access details along with brief descriptions of the types of display and the tactile qualities of artefacts.

Historic Scotland also offers free entry for one-to-one carers accompanying disabled visitors

Scottish Tourist Board (STB) Ratings
A number of our properties have been inspected and rated under VisitScotland’s star grading for accessibility facilities.

The scheme has three ratings:

·Category 1
Unassisted wheelchair access for visitors

·Category 2
Assisted wheelchair access for visitors

·Category 3
Access for visitors with mobility difficulties

Visitors' dogs
Visitors’ dogs are permitted at all sites (unless otherwise specified). They must be kept on a lead and should not be left unattended. They are not permitted in any roofed buildings (including visitor centres), and particularly not where food is prepared.

The only exception to these rules is for guide dogs and assistance dogs which are permitted at all sites and within roofed areas.

No fouling is allowed at any site. Poop scoops are provided at all sites where dogs are allowed and are available from the site steward. Owners are asked to be sensitive to the effect of their dogs on others, especially children.
