Maclellan's Castle

Late 16th century noble residence

Maclellan's Castle

The remains of this late 16th century noble residence demonstrate how architecture evolved from the heavily defended tower house to a new more domestic, if grand, scale.

Highlights

  • ‘Below stairs’ – the dark vaults convey a wonderful impression of the working conditions of family servants.
  • ‘Laird’s Lug’ – the secret spy hole behind the great hall fireplace, from which the laird could eavesdrop on his guests.
  • The MacLellan Monument – the memorial erected to the memory of Sir Thomas and Lady Grissel MacLellan, in the adjacent Greyfriars Church.
